Local Dana bonito bite rips

DANA POINT — Capt. Brian Woolley reported tons of quality bonito from 4 to 10 pounds, which created pandemonium on deck for both 1/2- and 3/4-day anglers this past week.

The boats were getting stopped on the trolling jigs, sliding in on spots of surface fish breezing and finding the schools on the sonar. Anglers fishing surface jigs and small, heavy iron like Coltsnipers did best, if only because they didn't have to slow down to get a fresh bait.

Dana Wharf Sportfishing's Halibut Derby got off to a quick start with 9 fish for the leaderboard on their first trip out.

"We got the landing's Halibut Derby off to a great start on Friday on the Sum Fun. We ended our day with 9 halibut ranging in size from 5 to 17 pounds and lost a couple nice ones, one in particular with that nightmarish halibut surface headshake – it came off right at gaff. That one was around 25 pounds," said Woolley.

Over at Newport Harbor, the Davey's Locker fleet also found excellent bonito fishing on their local trips. Bass and bottom stuff added to the action. The Thunderbird was out Monday with 26 anglers on their overnight trip. The final tally was 5 bluefin and 71 yellowtail.

Bongos boats connected with the larger grade yellowfin tuna offshore. Most of the action has been on spots of dolphin. Bongos II had 10 on deck Friday, with the grade appearing to be 20 to over 50 pounds.
