Santa Ana River Lakes produces giant 21½-pound rainbow trout

Western Outdoor NewsPublished: Jan 26, 2012

ANAHEIM — Mike Parra of El Monte landed a giant 21½-pound rainbow trout while fishing with a yellow and orange plastic trout worm near the boat dock at the Santa Ana River Lakes this past week. It is one of the best trout of the season.

Overall, the trout action has remained very good on floating dough baits, plastic trout worms, small trout jigs, and inflated nightcrawlers. Adding one of the prepared scents, especially garlic, has improved the effectiveness of any of the baits or lures used. The trout are also showing all around the big lake and throughout Chris’ Pond, and big weekly plants of rainbows have kept the action hot, mostly on 1½ to 3-pound rainbows. This week’s plant will feature Nebraska Tailwalker rainbows.

Jessica Bogner of Pasadena landed an 8-pound rainbow off La Palma Point on an inflated nightcrawler. Santiago Palacios of West Covina had 6 rainbows for 15¾ pounds, including a 4 pounder, while fishing at the Bubble Hole with chartreuse floating bait. Anthony Perez of Azusa landed 7 rainbows for 17½ pounds on nightcrawlers at Levitz’ Corner.
