FISH ON! ANGLERS TOURNAMENT: EDWARDS LEADS WAY WITH FOURTH CALICO DIVISION WIN

SAN DIEGO
– You couldn’t have picked a better time of year for a sportfishing event that included both partyboats and skiffs, the only of its kind, as it was no problem for anglers to fill the seven categories.

The 5th Annual Chuck Byron Fish On! Anglers Tournament held last weekend out of  San Diego  saw  more than 100 anglers set out on the sportboats El Dorado or Dolphin II   from the San Diego landings and aboard  private boats  in search of winning the “biggest fish” categories of seven possible winners.

After fishing all day Saturday just about every boat brought in fish to weigh their catch. Results are as follows:

• TUNA: Val Villarreal caught a yellowfin on the El Dorado of that weighed 32.5 pounds.

• DORADO: Joe Motta, again this year, won with a 16.9 pounder caught on his boat Offspring.

• YELLOWTAIL: Kevin Allen fished his boat, Chilli Reel Eno, and weighed in at 7.8 pounds.

• CALICO BASS: Four-time winner Jim Edwards on his boat Cut Throat with a 4.7 pounder.

• IGFA SPECIE CAUGHT CLOSEST TO ITS WORLD RECORD WEIGHT:  A1.6-pound spotted bay bass by Ted Phoenix on the Ferret.

--  TOP LADY: Linda Kahl, on her first saltwater fishing trip, aboard the Dolphin II   weighed in a 19.3-pound yellowfin.

• TOP YOUTH: Roma Lira, who happened to be a winner at Make A Wish the week before, weighed a 26-pound yellowfin on his family boat Getting Jiggy.

Tournament Director Lori Byron told WON,  “It’s proven over the past five years that anglers fishing sportboats against private boats don’t have disadvantages or advantages that make one able to win more often than the other. One thing is for sure, we all had a great time.”

Best of all, said Byron, is that the El Dorado took 15 kids out on a one-day trip for free to fish the tournament, compliments of owner Steve Fukuto.

“We’d like to see this part of the tournament grow and have more boats participate in sponsoring more kids,” said Byron. “Introducing them to the world of fishing will keep our industry surviving and offer them the knowledge of our marine life and the ocean.”

The fun began on Sunday at the Bali Hai Restaurant, on Shelter Island with a beautiful outside bay view where anglers and artists enjoyed the awards banquet emceed   They passed out first place prizes donated by World Wide Fish Mounts, Chuck Byron Art, Mahi Rods, and Mad Dog Rods. Auction items such as Suzuki motors, Doc Ski Rods, original artwork by top offshore artists, long range trips and resorts stays brought in thousands of dollars along with the huge raffle.

The winners of this years’ Chuck Byron Youth Art Contest were awarded in prizes and donated their work for live auction. Those alone raised over $1,000 for the Chuck Byron Youth Art Fund, which offers them more art education and fishing with the Friends of Rollo. The names and artwork of those winners will be on website www.chuckbyron.com soon for your view with more information on this program that teaches kids the “art of fishing.” To get involved next year contact Lori Byron at fishoncontests@chuckbyron.com.
