Equipment Review: Lew’s BB1 Pro gets upgrades

Western Outdoor NewsPublished: Jun 19, 2018

Including QuietCast brake system

The new and improved Lew’s BB1 Pro Speed Spool is ready to impress. From its stylish good looks to its new QuietCast braking system, the BB1 Pro is re-defining what performance is all about.

The BB1 Pro features a premium 10-bearing system with double shielded ball bearings and a Zero-Reverse anti-reverse. The reel is a one-piece aluminum frame with graphite sideplates, and has a quick release sideplate for easy access to the braking system.

What’s new is the BB1 Pro’s updated externally adjustable 6-pin, 27 position QuietCast ACB Adjustable Centrifugal Braking System. QuietCast delivers an extreme range of braking power without the noise normally associated with centrifugal brake systems. Adjustments are easily made from free spool to maximum by simply clicking the reel’s external dial to choose among the 27 variable cast control settings.

QuietCast puts the angler in control of casts, perfectly aligning brake power to whatever the fishing conditions with just a simple click up or down to the desired level. The control range allows precise casting control over light lures, while maximizing casting distance with all lures.

Also an upgrade is the BB1 Pro’s bowed, anodized skeletal aluminum 95mm handle with Lew’s custom round EVA power grips.

What hasn’t changed is the series many quality design attributes, starting with the fact its oversized titanium line guide is positioned further from the spool to minimize friction and maximize casting performance.

The 35mm spool is braid ready and machine forged double anodized aluminum. It can hold 160 yards of 12-pound line. Spool tension is controlled by the double anodized tension knob that incorporates Lew’s patented Speed Dial line indicator that allows the angler to note what line type and size has been spooled.

The reel’s rugged carbon fiber drag system provides up to 20 pounds of drag power. Drag is controlled by an audible-click aluminum star drag.

The new BB1 Pro Speed Spool comes in four models, three right-hand and one left-hand. The right-cranking models are PRS1HZ with a 6.4:1 gear ratio and 28 IPT; PRS1SHZ with a 7.1:1 gear ratio and 31 IPT; and PRS1XHZ with an 8.0:1 gear ratio and 35 IPT.

The left-hand model is a PRS1SHZL with a 7.1:1 gear ratio that retrieves at 31 IPT.

The BB1 Pro Speed Spool remains a great buy at $199.99.
