Wicked Tuna’s Dave Marciano headed to Cabo Tourney

CABO SAN LUCAS — Captain Dave Marciano, one of the principal figures in the popular TV show Wicked Tuna, now in its eighth season on the National Geographic Channel, will be at the WON/Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament slated for Nov. 6-9, 2019.

DAVE MARCIANO OF National Geographic Channel’s Wicked Tuna will be the guest of Gray Taxidermy and attending the Cabo Tuna Jackpot.

Marciano will be the guest of the tournament and Gray Taxidermy, which is a longtime sponsor and is fully vested in an extensive tagging program of billfish and roosterfish. Marciano will go on a tagging excursion with a Pisces sportfisher the day before the event and will be at the tourney check-in the next day and throughout the four-day tourney based at the Hotel Tesoro and IGY Marina.

The tourney is now in its 21st year. Last year it was again the largest team jackpot tourney in Mexico and the largest tuna tourney in the world, with 163 teams battling for $840,800 over two days fishing for tuna, dorado and wahoo.

“Dave is a fantastic ambassador to fishing and is coming down for the tagging program, perfect timing as we are supporting the Tagging program even more. For example, our new $20,000 Gray Research Tuna Jackpot for teams who are competing ‘across the board’ will assist in purchasing more of the $5,000 satellite tags,” said Pat McDonell, Director of the event. “It will be fun having him there and giving the anglers an opportunity to meet Capt. Marciano.”

McDonell said the sign-ups are coming in steadily now with the tournament coming up, and especially as the bigger tuna over 200 pounds are showing in Cabo waters. One was just caught off Cabo by the Red Rum sportfisher Oh So Rojo on a kite outfit on porpoise schools.

Said Ryan Donovan of Redrum, “We’ve been waiting patiently for the big yellowfin to arrive, and with some cooler water that moved in on the Pacific side — here they are!”

THE OH SO ROJO sportboat in Cabo caught this on a kite rig last week as big tuna action heated up off Cabo San Lucas as tourney season approaches.
