GUERNEVILLE —The best steelhead fishing of the year should be coming up this week after a river blowout and flows of 3300 cfs with zero visibility on Jan. 18, according to Scott Heemstra of Kings Sport & Tackle in Guerneville.

steelheadwereSTEELHEAD WERE SURGING into the Russian River after a big blowup and high water on Jan. 18. Even before that, on Jan. 13 Steve Jackson of Kings Sport and Tackle drifted the river with guide James Keeling and they caught these nice steelies near Wholer Bridge using roe.

“There were big changes on the Russian,” said Heemstra on Saturday after the river blew out following rains, “and a small system is supposed to drop some more rain on Monday night with unsettled weather after that, so things should clear up by late week or into the weekend.”

He said that’s good news, since the high water should bring in new steelhead.

“The catching was slow last week, although some people did manage some fish, and Steve Jackson of the shop here floated with friends last Monday and went 3 or 4 with the largest steelhead going 13 pounds.
