Oregon House: Collins Lake decent for trout

Western Outdoor NewsPublished: Jan 16, 2020

OREGON HOUSE — Trout fishing was decent at Collins Lake last week for anglers soaking bait off the bank and some nice fish to nearly double digit size were reported.

BIT ON BAIT — Michael Hopkins of Yuba City shows off his 7.75-pound rainbow trout caught he caught on PowerBait while fishing at Collins Lake.

Hayden Sampley of Live Oak nailed a 9.75-pound rainbow while fishing off the bank near the marina with yellow dough bait and Channing Vengas, (hometown unknown), caught an 8.2 pounder while fishing the same area with inflated worms.

“The fishing is better from shore than from the boats,” said Sarah Bennett at Collins Lake Resort on Sunday. “And the best place to bank fish has been down by the dam.” She mentioned nightcrawler and various brands of floating dough baits were the top getters last week.

“The lake is still clear and beautiful, but we’ll see what happens after the next storms,” she said. “The lake is 25 feet from full currently.”

The fishing has been holding up considering Collins hasn’t been planted since Thanksgiving. Bennett said that the lake’s aggressive stocking program will resume around Presidents Day Weekend.
