Pyramid Lake bed bite yielding nice dividends

BY BLAKE WARREN/WON Staff WriterPublished: Apr 12, 2018

GORMAN — The spawn is in full swing at Pyramid Lake and lots of willing bass up tight to the banks means very good spring fishing, at least for the time being. To make things even better for those fishing Pyramid, nearby Castaic Lake is getting much of the attention from area anglers, making for a little less pressure on Pyramid’s spawning largemouth.

THIS LEAPING LARGEMOUTH was one of 10 caught by Jon and Julie Potts of Sylmar on a recent trip to Pyramid Lake using small plastics on the drop-shot.

“The bed bite is just ridiculous right now,” was the word from local guide Rusty Brown. “Guys are getting really good numbers and a few nicer fish to 5-plus pounds. There are lots of fish up on beds and my buddies Gary Robbins and Don Iovino just had a field day out there. Green Pumpkin Senkos and smaller Robos in Freeway Cove, Yellow Bar and around Spanish Point has been the deal.”

Brown added that the majority of recent catches have been largemouth and noted that a lot of the better bass are coming more from staging areas with deep-water access points a few feet lower in the water column. Anglers are also reporting success in these types of areas with suspending jerkbaits and mid-range cranks.

Jon and Julie Potts sampled the action at Pyramid recently via float tube and had a heck of a day. “We had an absolute blast throwing small plastics on the drop-shot,” Julie said. “He ended up getting 7 fish and I had 3. The water was nice and clear and warming up.”
