Score 2.14-pound spottie to post 9.67-pound limit for tight victory in Long Beach

LONG BEACH — The June 11 Saltwater Bass Series (SBS) Bay Region event was based from the Davies Launch facility in Long Beach where spotted bay bass would be the target species.

THE WINNERS OF the event with $1,720 in prize money for 9.67 pounds were Ty Ponder and Todd Klein.

Boundaries allowed to fish this event would include all legal areas of L.A. Harbor, Long Beach Harbor, Alamitos Bay and Huntington Harbor. Start time for the Bay events are 5 a.m. until 3 p.m., giving the competing teams 10 hours to come up with five 14-inch or larger bass.

As the horn sounded for the take off, most teams went north to fish L.A. and L.B. Harbor areas with most all of the rest staying in Alamitos Bay to start their tournament day. One team decided to run down the beach to Huntington Harbor in hopes of putting a nice limit together. That team happened to win the event with an impressive bag of feisty spotties. Half of the field weighed at least one 2 plus-pound bass bass, showing the potential for great weights for this Long Beach event.

First place with 9.67 were Ty Ponder and Todd Kline. These two anglers fish A-Rigs throughout the day, culling a fish here and there to finish up with their winning weight.

FINISHING SECOND WERE Garrett Ching and Joe Shagner.

Second were Garrett Ching and Joe Shagner with 9.16 pounds. Finishing third were Ryan Olsen and Jim Frumento with 8.65 pounds. Matt Kobzeff and Rex McConnell were fourth with 8.60 and Al and Angel Figueras finished out the top 5 with 7.34. The Big Bass award went to Chris Lillis and Larry Posod weighing a beautiful 2.89 pounder.

Jim Frumento and Ryan Olsen came in third with a total weight of 8.65 pounds good for $500.

With one event in the Bay Region and two to go in the Inshore / Islands Region, the teams are jousting for the top and qualifying spots to make the 2016 Mercury Marine / SBS Championship where the winning team will walk away with a 115 4-stroke Mercury motor!. Along with the motor going to the winners, $2,000 of Mercury cash will go into the payout! Other prizes will be raffled out, like a trip for two to Cedros Outdoor Adventures, a Motorguide Great White trolling motor, an annual service for the highest placing team running a Mercury motor from Quality Performance Marine, a trailer service from West Coast Trailers and a table full of sponsor product! This Championship will also have catered food for the teams to enjoy as the awards are presented.

Next up is the Mission Bay based Inshore / Islands Region event which holds no coastal or island boundaries. This tournament will be held at Dana Landing and will run from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m.
